Website Workgroup GDL
We are pleased to present the new website of the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of the CNR, completely renovated in its graphics and contents. The website presents a more agile and interactive navigation aimed at making the multidisciplinarity of scientific research and technology transfer of the Institute known in a simple and direct way in its various local, national and international activities. It becomes a platform that integrates interactive contents, such as videos / photo-gallery, with the contribution of social media, and a section dedicated to news and events makes this virtual space dynamic and constantly updated.
A site that has grown a lot thanks to Antonio Greco's design and graphic commitment and the contribution of the working group made up of researchers and technicians from all four ICB offices. This new virtual space of the institute was created to be functional and best represent the institute through a constant and interactive update of its contents. It is therefore designed to be highly user-friendly also thanks to a contact section prepared with dedicated forms designed to collect various requests.
This platform does not fail to give visibility to the publication of competition notices, scholarships, doctorates and research grants as well as to act as a useful tool for students interested in carrying out their internship or experimental thesis activity in the laboratories of the Institute. Last but not least, the site presents areas dedicated to the visibility of the projects and agreements in which the institute is involved, the technology transfer activities and the visibility of its patent portfolio with the aim of attracting the interest of new companies and potential industrial partners.
The activity of the components of the GdL Website will be maintained through the constant updating of the platform also thanks to the inputs that will be sent by all the staff of the Institute.

Elisabetta Alberico
ResearcherElisabetta Alberico obtained her Master of Science – Chemistry (with honours) at the University of Sassari, Italy and her Ph. D. (Summa cum Laude) at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule in Aachen, Germany. She has been research associate at the University of Ottawa, Canada, in the group of Prof. Howard Alpern, working at the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of key 1-methyl carbapenem intermediates via hydroformylation using a zwitterionic rhodium catalyst. Since 2001 she is researcher at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry ICB-CNR in Sassari, Italy and, since 2011, she is associate researcher in the group of Prof. Matthias Beller at the Leibniz Institut für Catalyse, Rostock, Germany. She is co-author of 48 publications on international peer-reviewed journals (Web of Science, September 2021) and 5 book chapters. She has been reviewer for ACS Catalysis, Organometallics, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Science, ChemCatChem, Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry, Chemistry Select, Journal of Molecular Catalysis, Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical, Journal of Organometallic Chemistry. Her research interests are devoted to the design and synthesis of novel homogeneous catalysts based on noble and non-noble transition metals, for hydrogenation, transfer hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions; to the development of homogeneous catalytic processes for the reduction of multiple bonds as key steps in the synthesis of molecules of industrial relevance; to the homogeneously catalyzed hydrogen generation from renewables (methanol, formic acid) under mild conditions; to the investigation into the mechanism of the reactions catalyzed by the developed catalysts.

Fabrizio Chiodo
ResearcherFabrizio Chiodo studies carbohydrate-mediated immunological responses mostly in the context of conjugate-vaccines and host-pathogen interactions. He defended his PhD in 2013 in Spain (Applied Chemistry, working on synthetic vaccines and nanotechnology applied to vaccinology), and in 2014 he obtained a personal grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research working at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry and Leiden University Medical Center. He initiated and strengthened International collaborations in the field of vaccinology especially with the Finlay Institute in Havana (Cuba), where he is appointed as Invited Lecturer at the Faculty of Chemistry. In 2018 he was awarded with a personal grant from the Amsterdam Infection and Immunity Institute working independently at the Y. van Kooyk group. From October 2020 he is a Research Assistant Professor at the Italian National Research Council (CNR) working at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry, Naples, keeping his affiliation and position also in Amsterdam.

Carmelo Drago
ResearcherCarmelo Drago graduated in chemistry at the University of Catania on 21st December 2001 (grade, 110/110). In April 2002 he started a PhD at the Chemistry Department of Sheffield University (U.K.) working on a project entitled “Combinatorial Approaches to Catalysis for Asymmetric Sulfide Oxidation” under the supervision of Prof. R. F. W. Jackson. This project was funded by the European Union and was part of an European Network project: COMBICAT “The Discovery of New Molecular Catalysts through Combinatorial Chemistry”. In December 2005, he moved to Milan where he undertook his experience at CISI scrl, originally a spin-off supported by the University of Milan on guidance of Prof. Carlo Scolastico, where he was involved on the “design, synthesis and biological screening of libraries of molecules obtained using high throughput techniques starting from original structural unities, for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications”. In March 2011, he moved to the Nanotechnologies Laboratory of the ISTM (CNR) in Milan, where he worked on a project concerning the Synthesis, design and characterization of SPIO nanoparticles conjugated to biomolecules for therapeutic and diagnostic applications under the supervision of Dr. Alessandro Ponti, with whom he currently continues to collaborate. Since November 2011, he is working as a permanent researcher (reg.-n° 14514) at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry (CNR) of Catania, where he is involved in research projects in the area of sustainable chemistry (development of catalytic, sustainable, for the transformation of used vegetable oils into biofuels), medicinal chemistry (synthesis of molecules for therapeutic and diagnostic applications) and in the field of functionalized materials both for the development of biosensors (amperometric, optical, etc.) and drug delivery (functionalization of SPIO nanoparticles).

Ilaria Finore
ResearcherDr. Finore received his Bachelor Degree in Environmental Sciences, Marine specialization at the Parthenope University in 2006, discussing the experimental thesis in Marine Microbiology entitled “Biodiversity studies of halophilic species of the salt lake Fuente de Piedra” , with the vote of 110/110; She then obtained the title of Expert in the Management of Protected Natural Areas at the University of Molise, from the 1st Master (Level II) in Governance of protected natural areas. In 2011, Dr. Finore obtained the title of DOCTOR of RESEARCH in “Environment, Resources and Sustainable Development” (XXIII cycle) by discussing the experimental doctoral thesis entitled: “Bioethanol: a source of renewable energy from extremophiles” with Label of “Doctor Europaeus” held at the CNR Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry of Pozzuoli (Na). Since 2019, she was promoted to the position of research fellow at ICB for the strategic area of Green Chemistry.

Claudia Honisch
ResearcherClaudia Honisch received her master’s degree in Pharmacy at the University of Padua on March 7th 2016, with an experimental thesis carried out as part of the Erasmus Project at Universität Regensburg (DE) entitled “Synthesis and pharmacological characterization of cabamoylguanidine-type histamine H2 receptor agonists “under the supervision of Prof. Armin Buschauer. In June 2016 she obtained the Qualification to Practice the Profession of Pharmacist. In September 2016 she started a scholarship at ICB-CNR Padua research site aimed at the “Characterization of thermal muds” of the Euganean thermal district. In October 2017 she started the PhD course in Molecular Sciences, curriculum Chemical Sciences, at the Chemistry Department of the University of Padua working on a project entitled “Aggregating proteins and their interaction with chemical chaperones” under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Ruzza (ICB-CNR). This work, which involved a close collaboration with the Diamond Light Source Ltd synchrotron facility (Didcot, U.K.) Beamline B23 for Circular Dichroism, was defended on March 24th 2021 in front of an international commission with the achievement of the title of Doctor Europaeus. Since September 2019 she holds a Research Grant within the AdriAquaNet Project, which is part of the EU Interreg V Italy-Croatia 2014-2020 Program. Within this context, the research activity has focused on the identification, synthesis and purification of peptide sequences with antimicrobial activity (antimicrobial peptides, AMPs) which allow to avoid the emergence of resistance to traditional antibiotics.

Genoveffa Nuzzo
ResearcherNuzzo G. graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Naples in July 2008 with 110 cum laude, with an experimental thesis in organic chemistry. She holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Salerno, focusing her research activity on the exploration of the chemical diversity of marine organisms. After PhD, she continued the research activity of biomolecules from marine organisms, focusing in the study of lipids and structure characterization of marine metabolites by both Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry. She carried out research in various projects aimed mainly at identifying active molecules for health from marine sources. She is member of a Spin-Off BioSearch S.r.l. with the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, ICB-CNR Institute and Italbiotech (Non-profit organization), whose goal is the discover of new natural compounds from marine organisms for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical purposes. As main research of interest she is currently working on the development of a marine natural compounds’ library for drug discovery, upgraded chromatographic techniques used for the purification of biomolecules, spectroscopic and advanced spectrometers methods for the chemical characterization and stereochemistry determination of natural products.

Fabiana Piscitelli
ResearcherDr. Piscitelli graduated in Chemistry at the University of Naples “Federico II” in 2006 and in 2008 she completed her master’s degree in Chemical Sciences. She received a PhD in Neurobiology at the University of Insubria in Busto Arsizio (VA) in January 2013. She also completed hes post-doc at the ICB-CNR in 2013. Since 2016 she has been a permanent researcher in the group of Dr. Di Marzo Vincenzo, coordinator of the Endocannabinoid Research Group and Canada Excellence Research Chair in the Microbiome-Endocannabinoidome Axis in Metabolic Health at Laval University, Quebec City. She is also very active in scientific dissemination and outreach activities for schools and / or for the general public. In this regard, since 2017 she has been organizing theoretical-practical schools of mass spectrometry with the support of the Mass Spectrometry Division of the Italian Chemical Society (DSM-SCI). She is also a member of the IUPAC Subcommitee on Publications and of the Editorial Board.

Vincenzo Zambrano
TechnologistDr. Vincenzo Zambrano, born in Sassari on September 13, 1972, obtained the high school degree at the “G.Spano” Scientific high school, Sassari, July 1991.
He graduated in Chemistry at the University of Sassari on 10 November 1997 with a final grades of 110/110 cum laude, discussing an experimental thesis entitled “Rhodium complexes with pyridines and 2,2 ‘- substituted bipyridines” , supervisor Prof. Giovanni Minghetti, co-supervisor Dr. Antonio Zucca.
He obtained the qualification to the profession of chemist in november 1997.
He received his PhD in Chemical Sciences at the University of Sassari on February 27, 2004, discussing an experimental thesis entitled “Variable synthesis of carbasugars and their analogues”, tutor Dr. Luigi Pinna, co-tutor Dr. Gloria Rassu.
Following a public competition he took up service at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry from 02/01/2008 with the qualification of Technologist.

Antonio Greco
Technical assistantAntonio Greco obtained a scientific high school diploma in Electronics and Telecommunications in 1995 followed by the professional qualification of “Web Developer” in 2007.
Since 2012 he has been an employee of the CNR, working at the Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry, branch of Catania, where he has mainly been involeved to the design and graphical creation of brochures, posters, catalogs, leaflets, posters, roll-ups. Antonio has also been the referent in the structural and graphical design of web pages to support conferences, courses, research projects, publications and magazines acitivities whose aim to give visibility of the institute itself as well as the dissemination and advertising of events and activities developed among the four Institute’s branch. He has been responsible for the design, implementation and continuous updating of the website dedicated to the ICB branch of Catania and He is currently the referent in the ongoing renovation project of the single site of the Institute www.icb.cnr.it.
Moreover, at Catania’s brach, he lends support to the administrative activity by dealing with the management of the protocol activity; the administrative procedures for the disposal of special waste, the preparation of their related internal management regulations, the updating of the “loading and unloading” registers and the predisposition of its annual MUD report. Finally, he is the person in charge for the inventory as well as a treasurer of the financial fund of Catania’s branch; and he is also an instructor point for MEPA orders and technical assistant to the RUP in the preparation of purchases for the institute.
